Fall, 2012 Academic Tuition Education Grants for in the areas of Business Management and Agricultural Studies will be awarded to nine outstanding students at TS Marryshow college. Students are required to meet specific criteria and maintain above average grades to receive this generous grant to attend a 2 year course of their preference.

Promoting literacy and reading are a focus of Friends Through Books, thus the idea of organizing a literacy and book campaign for specific schools in Grenada, Petite Martinique and Carriacou was born. With the guidance of Fr. Andrew Barnard in Morne Jaloux contact was made with Mrs. Jacqueline Phillip, headmistress at St. Joseph’s Roman Catholic School in Morne Jaloux and Ms. Judy Belmar headmistress at St. Michael’s R.C School in Woburn to enhance the current selection of books in their schools and further promote reading in the schools. In March, 2012 Friends Through Books donated over 350 books.

The Ashby Windward Foundation was the main sponsor of the first Session of the Carriacou and Petite Martinique Youth Parliament debate. This prestigious event is intended to encourage the young Parliamentarians who have demonstrated unsurpassed interest, enthusiasm and courage in accepting the challenge to debate publicly a controversial topic. This event took place in Carriacou with members of Grenada’s House of Parliament and House of Representatives in attendance in addition to other members of the community.

Members of the foundation attended a fundraiser dinner to raise funds to improve the playground at St. Joseph’s RC School in Morne Jaloux. A generous grant was presented on behalf of the foundation to assist in much needed repair and construction of the playground used by students at St. Joseph’s RC School.

While donating books to the students at the Harvey Vale Government School, the Vice Principal, Mrs. Thieria Mills, was asked what her biggest obstacle was in educating the students. Without hesitation she stated that it is very hard to get the children to school on a routine basis due to the old and falling septic system.

Two students ages 15 & 16 who expressed a keen interest in pursuing a career in medicine (pediatrics and obstetrics/gynecology) were selected from Bishop’s College and Hillsborough Secondary School in Carriacou to attend a 10 day Med Vet Summer program at St. George’s University in Grenada. The two students attended courses that combined didactic lectures, small-group problem solving sessions, practical lab work, and hands-on training through simulated and real-life situations in state-of-the art facilities.

In August of 2009 we delivered several hundred books to the L’Esterre Rosary Roman Catholic School. We were overwhelmed by the support and thanks we received from the students, teachers and local dignitaries. This set the stage for our continued work with book donations and education of the students on the islands of Carriacou and Petite Martinique. Principal Sharon Bristol, Minister of Carriacou George Prime and Father Augustine Boateng were instrumental in assisting us with the event.

This young man from Carriacou was awarded a grant by the foundation to attend the 2 year architecture program at TAMCC in Grenada. Several citizens of Carriacou were also instrumental in coordinating fundraising projects for this grant to help make this young man’s dream of furthering his education in a field he is passionate about a reality.
